ONZE MISSIE

It is our pledge to society: 'Amsterdam UMC takes responsibility for providing high-quality, affordable, and accessible academic care and contributing to a healthy society.'

Using our knowledge and expertise to benefit society. That is what we mean by 'making societal impact' and 'valorisation'. This can be done in many ways. Helping to develop a vaccine. Contributing to national policy and new guidelines. Providing health education at festivals. The point is that we disseminate our findings far beyond the walls of our knowledge institute.

Making societal impact is a legal requirement for all university medical centers in the Netherlands. We can and must use our knowledge to contribute to a healthier society and accessible healthcare for all. Together, we have many assets at our disposal to achieve this.

As a knowledge institute, we work to improve people's health now and in the future. How we do this is laid down in our long-term strategy, 'A healthy future for all'. We gain knowledge through scientific research, pass on knowledge through education and training, apply knowledge in patient care, and translate knowledge into policy and practice. Our mission is: 'Together, we are discovering the healthcare of tomorrow'.

Valorisation is a core task of Amsterdam UMC, just like care, research, education, and training. We are the first university medical center to assign this task to a Vice Dean of Valorisation and the Amsterdam Valorisation Board. This demonstrates how much importance we attach to this task as a knowledge institute.

Our vision is elaborated in the Valorisation Position Paper. In this document, we outline four ways to create societal impact.

Taking the initiative to shape tomorrow's healthcare is the first impulse in Amsterdam UMC's 2025-2030 multi-year strategy. We gather new knowledge and share it as widely as possible with our partners and society.

To help you put that vision into practice, we have created the Valorisation Compass: a guide from idea to implementation.
