A manifesto for
future generations

Future generations are not yet seen, unheard, or unprotected. Yet, we can and must take their interests into account in our policies and actions today. With this in mind, Amsterdam UMC has drafted a manifesto with practical tools, based on scientific knowledge.

Taking future generations into account is possible and necessary, by giving them a voice today. By visualizing and making tangible the effects they will soon experience from our decisions and actions—effects that are passed down from generation to generation. By applying the principles of intergenerational justice and thereby protecting the health of current and future generations.

The manifesto Tomorrow Begins Today. Taking Future Generations into Account: It can be done offers practical guidance. The recommendations are based on scientific insights and grouped into three pillars:

Take responsibility for future generations by testing policy for long-term effects

1

Create equal opportunities for future generations by investing in a healthy environment

2

Build a sustainable healthcare sector for future generations

3

’With our manifesto, we invite policymakers at all levels to reinforce that mission. To make a positive contribution to the health of people now and tomorrow, to think in decades, and to shape a future in which everyone has a fair chance at health,” said Commissioner for Future Generations Tessa Roseboom.’
